This one genuinely surprised me. CD Projekt Red has confirmed a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, called Songs of the Past, and the first proper look drops at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25. Geralt is back.
Read that date again, though: the footage is this month, but the expansion lands in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. That is roughly 12 years after the base game and 11 after Blood and Wine, which most of us had long since filed as the last word on Geralt. Apparently not.
What we actually know
Not a lot yet, which is the honest answer. CD Projekt Red's own announcement (via its press center) confirms the name, the Gamescom showing, and that you play as Geralt again. The Opening Night Live segment runs at 8pm CEST / 2pm ET on the 25th, with the game also on the Gamescom show floor from the 26th. Beyond that, no scope, no price, no story details.
So treat the hype accordingly. A new Witcher 3 expansion in 2026 sounds like a gift, but a 2027 launch is a long runway, and CD Projekt's main focus is clearly the next full Witcher game. Where Songs of the Past sits between those two things, and how meaty it is, are the questions the trailer needs to answer.
Why now?
The obvious read: The Witcher 3 keeps selling, the studio has a gap before its next big release, and a beloved old game plus a proven engine is a low-risk way to keep the lights warm. That is not a criticism. Blood and Wine was one of the best expansions anyone has made. If Songs of the Past clears even half that bar, it is worth the wait. I just want to see it move before I get carried away.
We will know a lot more on August 25. For now: it is real, it is Geralt, and it is not out for a while.
