[UPDATE] The Witcher 3's Songs of the Past Shows Its First Footage Tuesday

Earlier this month we flagged that The Witcher 3 was getting a brand new expansion, its first since Blood and Wine in 2016, and that Gamescom would be where we'd finally see it. Now it has a name, Songs of the Past, and a slot: CD Projekt Red is showing the first footage at Opening Night Live on Tuesday, August 25.

Here's what's actually confirmed. You play as Geralt again. It's due in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with no Switch 2 mention, so don't hold your breath there. And CDPR isn't building it alone: the expansion is co-developed with Fool's Theory, a studio staffed with people who worked on Wild Hunt itself (and who are handling the Witcher 1 remake).

Ten years on, and worth doing?

A new Witcher 3 expansion in 2027 is a strange, lovely idea. The base game is a decade old and people still play it to bits. The risk is obvious too. Bolting fresh story onto a finished, beloved game is hard to get right, and it can just as easily feel like a bonus chapter nobody needed. CDPR reportedly aimed the Gamescom demo at a balance between showing real new content and not spoiling it, which is at least the right instinct.

We'll know more Tuesday. For now, cautious optimism. Blood and Wine set a high bar, and this team has the pedigree to clear it.
