File this under rumour, and a shrinking one at that. The talk of a surprise Xbox sequel turning up at Gamescom just got quietly downgraded by the same person who started it.

Quick recap: earlier this month, leaker NateTheHate2 floated that Xbox had an unannounced sequel to an existing Xbox franchise in the works - made by a third-party studio rather than an in-house team - and possibly headed for Gamescom. Windows Central's Jez Corden nodded along, reckoning Xbox had something unexpected lined up. It wasn't Banjo-Kazooie, and that was about all anyone would commit to.

Now NateTheHate2 has walked it back, saying a Gamescom appearance for the thing "seems unlikely" after all. The project may well exist - the reveal just probably isn't happening at this show.

What it's worth

Not much yet, and that's the honest read. When the original source softens their own claim inside a fortnight, that's your cue to hold it loosely rather than mark a calendar. Gamescom runs in Cologne until Saturday, so if Xbox does drop a surprise, there's still a window. Just don't build your weekend around it.
