The next Plague Tale game is out this Thursday, August 27, and here's the bit worth knowing before you think about buying it: it's on Xbox Game Pass day one, with Play Anywhere support. If you're already subscribed, this one costs you nothing to try.
Asobo Studio is back on it, the same team behind A Plague Tale: Innocence and Requiem, with Focus Entertainment publishing again. It's on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
What it is
Resonance is a prequel, set fifteen years before the saga we already have. You're not playing Amicia and Hugo this time. The lead is a woman named Sophia, and the story follows her to a mythical island as she digs into her family's connection to the place. Focus describes it as blending combat, mythology and exploration, which is Asobo staying in its lane rather than reinventing itself.
There's a Collector's Box and a Heritage Pack for pre-orders, though Focus hasn't put a standard price on the page I'm looking at, so I won't guess one.
Worth a punt, with one caveat
Asobo's last two were gorgeous and heavy on atmosphere, and a bit repetitive once the stealth-and-swarm loop settled in. Whether Resonance sharpens that up is the open question, and full reviews won't land until launch. But 'free on Game Pass and a new setting to poke around' is an easy yes for a Thursday night. Go in curious, not expecting a reinvention.
