It is out. After two decades in cold storage, Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched today on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2, and the reviews landed with it. The short version: Capcom got the important bit right.

That important bit is the fighting. Nearly every review leads with the deflection-based combat and the boss encounters, and they are not being polite about it. IGN handed out a 10/10. Nintendo Life, RPG Site and a clutch of others sat at 9/10. The consensus is that the slower, more deliberate parry-and-counter rhythm feels great once it clicks, and that the bosses are some of the best Capcom has built in years.

It's not all top marks

Siliconera came in lower at 7/10, and its complaint is worth reading before you buy: not enough weapon variety, with movesets that thin out over a roughly 30-hour run. A few other outlets nudged at the same thing, plus a story that does the job without ever really landing, and open-world stretches that slow the pacing more than they add to it. Gorgeous to fight in, a bit uneven around the edges.

On Switch 2 it runs about as well as Capcom's other ports there, which is to say it holds together with reduced resolution and framerate options rather than a locked showcase mode.

The catch

It is a full-price release: 69.99 USD / 59.99 GBP. For a series that has been dormant since Dawn of Dreams in 2006, that is a confident number, and on the strength of the combat reviews it looks earned. If you have been waiting since the PS2 days, this is the one to come back for.

We covered the launch details and a beginner deflection primer earlier in the week; the reviews now back up the hype.
