Here's a genuine first. The second weekend of the Modern Warfare 4 beta, running August 28 to September 1, is the first time Call of Duty has let people play Warzone in an open beta rather than watch it from the outside. And it's launching that with a new map: Zodiac.

What Zodiac actually is

Zodiac is a Resurgence map from the teams behind Rebirth Island and Vondel, set around a sprawling drone-and-weapons manufacturing facility in South Korea. Ten points of interest, a shoreline, tunnels, rooftops, and a couple of moving set pieces, including solar panels that shift and twin trains running through the middle, so the layout doesn't sit still while you fight over it. It caps at 44 players, with Resurgence Quads as the headline playlist.

That player count tells you the intent. This is the tight, fast, respawn-heavy Resurgence flavour, not the big 150-player battle royale. Good call for a beta. Nobody wants to learn a new map by dropping once and dying in a bush for ten minutes.

Why it matters beyond the map

Betas are marketing, sure. But letting people actually touch Warzone before launch is a shift. Usually the battle royale side stays behind glass until release day, bugs and all. Putting it in an open beta is either confidence or a stress test dressed up as a treat. Probably both.

The multiplayer side of the beta added a new 6v6 map and the Combat Outpost mode alongside Zodiac, so there's plenty to poke at this weekend.

We ran through how to spend your beta weekend here, and covered the CoD NEXT reveal that kicked all this off.
