Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2, a sequel to its 2009 point-and-click adventure about a small rusty robot and a scrapyard world you can't help but poke at. The studio dropped the news on 8 October with a short clip of its hand-painted art and a Steam page.

What we actually know

Not loads yet. It's confirmed for PC via Steam and GOG, where you can wishlist it now, and there's no release date. The one gameplay detail so far: you'll control two characters, Josef and Berta, switching between them to solve puzzles together, which is a shift from the original's lone-robot setup.

Why now, 17 years later

Amanita's Jakub Dvorsky gave the plainest answer you'll hear from a studio head this year: "We're not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending, so if we were ever going to make Machinarium 2, now is the right time."

Fair enough. Amanita has spent those years making lovely, strange things, Samorost 3, Botanicula, Pilgrims, so a sequel to its best-known game is a genuine treat even with no date attached. No word on consoles yet either, which is worth flagging given the original eventually turned up nearly everywhere. For now, it's a wishlist and a wait.
