The GTA 6 detail that stuck with me from Game Informer's cover story isn't the weather or the alligators. It's the map. Rockstar has finally put names to the state of Leonida, and it makes clear that Vice City is one corner of something much bigger.

What's actually in Leonida

Leonida is Rockstar's take on Florida, and the regions it's confirmed cover a fair spread of it. There's Vice City itself, the neon-soaked metropolis everyone pictures. Then the Leonida Keys, a chain of islands trailing off the south coast. Port Gellhorn sits up on the panhandle as a working industrial town. Grassrivers is the Everglades stand-in, all wetland and swamp. There's Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park for the backcountry.

That's a state built out of genuinely different places, not one city with some countryside bolted on. If you played Red Dead Redemption 2, you know Rockstar can make a map feel like it has weather systems and moods of its own. Leonida looks like it's aiming for the same thing.

The research angle

The part of the interview I believe is the effort. Rockstar's designers told Game Informer they went to Florida to get the look and feel right, down to how the light sits on the water and what grows where. That tracks with the studio's history. Whether it turns into a place worth driving across slowly, rather than fast-travelling past, is the thing we can't know until it's in our hands.

The catch

None of this tells us how it plays. A big, pretty, regionally varied map is table stakes for Rockstar now. The question is what you actually do across it, and that's the bit still under wraps with launch set for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. For now, though, it's nice to have real names to point at instead of squinting at trailer footage.
