Fields of Mistria left Early Access on August 5, and if you're starting fresh on the 1.0 build, the opening week quietly sets the tone for everything after. None of this is hard, but the game doesn't spell it out, and a couple of these will save you real hours. No spoilers, just the practical stuff.
1. Rush the pickaxe, then the mines
Your axe turns up early, but the pickaxe is the tool that actually opens the game up. Grab the "Do a Bro a Favor" job off the town Quest Board on Day 2 and talk to Olric to get it. That unlocks the Mines, which is where your tool upgrades and a good chunk of your early money come from.
2. Water first, every single morning
Before you talk to anyone, before you go wandering, water your crops. And keep an eye on the calendar: anything still in the ground when the season flips is dead, however close it was to harvest. Don't plant a slow crop three days out from a season change and expect it to make it.
3. Don't live off farming alone
In week one, keep a small, manageable patch of crops going and lean on foraging and fishing for backup cash. A tidy little farm plus one side income beats a sprawling field you can't keep watered.
4. Grab the free soup
Pop into the Sleeping Dragon Inn and interact with the big cauldron over the fire for a free Soup of the Day. That's roughly 20 stamina back for nothing, which in the early game is a genuinely meaningful slice of your energy bar.
5. The mines pay off in layers
Early floors hand you copper and coal for basic upgrades. Push past floor 10 and iron and silver start showing up; go deeper still and you're into crystals and rarer materials. You don't need to rush the depths, but every ten floors is a real gear jump.
On the townsfolk
Relationships build slowly through daily chats, so a quick word with people as you pass does more over a season than one grand gesture. There are ten romanceable characters if that's your thing, and each has a proper arc rather than a one-note gift loop. No rush, though. The farm will still be there tomorrow.
