Dan Houser doesn't say much in public, so this counts as news on its own. The writer behind the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead stories, who left Rockstar in 2020, went on Variety's Strictly Business podcast on October 2 and finally put some shape to what his studio, Absurd Ventures, is actually making.

There are two games. The first is an open-world comedy, which Houser said is leaning hard into humour and character memory, with more details promised in the coming months. The second is the one likely to grab the headlines: a sci-fi project he described as "a dystopian sci-fi about a video game development gone very wrong", built around a rogue AI that becomes sentient and, by his account, doesn't much like itself, because the two people who made it didn't like each other.

What we don't know

Quite a lot, honestly. There are no official titles yet, no platforms, and no release windows. The "coming months" line on the comedy game suggests a proper reveal isn't far off, and the timing has people guessing at December's Game Awards, but that's reading tea leaves rather than a confirmed date.

Still, a GTA writer making an open-world comedy is a genuinely interesting swing, if only because comedy is the thing big open-world games almost never fully commit to. Worth keeping an eye on. Just park the expectations until there's something to actually look at.
