Valheim's 1.0 launch and its final biome, the Deep North, arrive September 9. It is a frozen, enemy-dense endgame zone, and unlike a fresh survival game you do not want to walk in cold. Here is what is worth sorting in the days before, based on what previews and the existing progression have told us.

Clear the Ashlands first

The Deep North sits behind the Ashlands. If you have not beaten Fader, that is your real prep job, because you cannot meaningfully progress north until you have. Everything below assumes you are Ashlands-ready or close to it.

Stock food and mead, not just gear

Food is the single biggest lever in Valheim, since your best three dishes set your health and stamina ceiling in every biome. Get a stack of your strongest health, stamina and Eitr foods built up now rather than raiding whatever is left in your base on the day. This is the highest-impact thing you can do before the 9th.

For the cold, Frost Resistance Mead is the accessible starting point: it is a Swamp-tier brew, so most players can already make it. The recipe is 10 Honey, 5 Thistle, 2 Bloodbag and 1 Greydwarf Eye in a Mead Ketill. One caveat: 1.0 is said to add a new frostbite debuff that regular frost resistance may not fully cover, so treat the mead as your first-trip stopgap, not a permanent fix. Deep North-tier armour to counter it is still preview talk until the update is live.

Grab the grappling hook and set up portals

The grappling hook is confirmed for 1.0 and unlocks through Mistlands research, so you can craft it now without setting foot in the Deep North. Handy. The biome also sits on the far northern edge of the map, so the trek is long: line up portal materials and plan to leapfrog your way up rather than sailing the whole way each time.

Don't forget the Megingjord for carry weight either. You will be hauling more than usual.

What's actually up there

Previews point to Moose (tameable and rideable), the night-active Elaking, and the Gammeltroll, described as the largest creature in the whole game. Details may shift once it is out, so take the bestiary as a rough sketch rather than a checklist. Do the food and the Ashlands, and you will be in decent shape on the 9th.
