Supermassive Games, the Guildford studio behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, is laying off up to 75 people. It described the move as a necessary step to keep the company sustainable, which is the same language studios reach for every time this happens.

The numbers, reported by Gematsu and Engadget, are grim in aggregate. Roughly 90 went in February 2024, about 35 more in July 2025, and now up to 75. Supermassive had 172 staff at the end of 2025, so this round alone could be a big chunk of what's left.

The context nobody wanted

Directive 8020, the studio's most recent game, landed to a lukewarm reception, and horror-adventure is a tough genre to keep a mid-size team funded on. There's a bitter footnote, too: a sequel to Until Dawn was announced back in June, but Supermassive isn't making it. That's Sony's own Firesprite. The studio that built the thing doesn't get to build the follow-up.

None of this is unique to Supermassive. It's the same story the whole industry has been telling all year. Doesn't make it read any better for the 75 people getting the email.
