State of Play's September Show: Everything That Actually Got a Date

Sony ran two showcases back to back on September 3, a regular State of Play followed by a State of Play Japan, and together they ate up close to two hours. Plenty of trailers, but the part worth keeping is the dates. Here is what got one.

The ones with hard dates

Marvel's Wolverine is the big surprise: it is out September 15, this month, exclusively on PS5. Insomniac has kept it quiet for years, so a date barely a fortnight out is a genuine jolt. We have a separate piece on that one.

The other headliner is closure for a very long project. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final part of the remake trilogy Square Enix started back in 2020, is set for April 8, 2027 on PS5. There was an extended look to go with it.

Filling out the calendar: Until Dawn 2 on January 28, 2027, and Metro 2039 on February 4, 2027. Nearer term, Ghost of Yotei's Most Wanted mode arrives October 1, Crimson Desert's Charting the Unknown expansion on October 15, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World on December 3.

Announced, no firm date yet

Maneater 2 is coming in 2027, as is a big Monster Hunter Wilds expansion called Ascendance. Konami showed Rhapsody in Scarlet, an action-adventure set in 1920s New York. And GTA 6 turned up mainly to confirm limited-edition DualSense controllers ahead of its November 19 launch.

The odd one out: a LEGO PlayStation set, a 1,911-piece replica console, out October 1. Double Fine's atmospheric puzzle game Keeper also shadow-dropped on PS5 the same day.

The Japan half was all RPGs

State of Play Japan leaned hard into role-playing games. Fate/Extra Record, a full remake, shares that January 28 date. Also shown: Rev. Noir, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, Gundam Rogue Orbit, and The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes, the series' first console game. On the PS Plus side, the Premium catalogue is getting Dino Crisis 2, the original Ratchet & Clank, and Mega Man X: Command Mission.

A stacked couple of hours, then, and unusually front-loaded: for once the biggest reveal is a game you can play in less than two weeks.
