Back when Star Wars Zero Company got its August 27 date, the pitch was simple: turn-based tactics from Bit Reactor, a studio stacked with XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns veterans. The obvious question was whether the pedigree would show. The previews are out now, and the early answer is yes.
What the hands-on crowd found
Previewers logged serious time with it, some 10 to 18 hours, which is more than the usual carefully-guarded demo. The consensus: the XCOM lineage is intact. Cover, flanking, tough odds, and permadeath that makes you feel every wrong move. Xbox Wire came away calling it a highlight; Game Informer framed it as XCOM meeting Star Wars in the best way.
The twist is how much weight it puts on your squad. There is a Mass Effect-style bonding system, relationships between characters, injuries that carry, and an original story set in the last years of the Clone Wars. It wants you attached to the people you might lose.
The one flag worth noting
It is not a clean sweep. The recurring gripe across previews is mission variety, with more than one writer wondering whether the objectives stay fresh across a full campaign. That is the kind of thing a preview can only guess at and the full game has to answer.
For now, the signs are good. If XCOM plus Star Wars sounds like your idea of a good time, keep an eye on this one when it lands August 27 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series machines. We will have a clearer verdict once the whole thing is playable.
