Star Fox on Switch 2 is a faithful remake, and it plays beautifully at a steady 60fps. It is also from an era that assumed you already knew what you were doing. If you are new to the Arwing, or you last flew one in the nineties, a few basics make it click far faster.
Learn the barrel roll early
Tap L or R twice to barrel roll. It deflects incoming fire, and on the harder routes you will lean on it constantly. Get it into your fingers now, before the game starts throwing walls of lasers your way.
Hold fire to lock on
Rather than mashing the fire button, hold it to charge a lock-on shot that hits several enemies at once. It clears crowds far more efficiently than tapping, and it is the difference between a tidy run and a frantic one.
The route you pick sets the difficulty
There are roughly two dozen paths from Corneria to Venom, and the branch you take decides which missions you get and how hard the run is. Open the map viewer and press X on a planet to see what a route needs. If you are still learning, take the gentler paths. The hard routes are where the real challenge, and the better scores, live.
Get comfy in the Arwing before anything else
You will pilot three craft across the game: the Arwing, the Landmaster and the Blue-Marine. But the Arwing is where the fundamentals live. Nail its handling, dodging and lock-on first, and the other vehicles feel far less awkward when they turn up.
Grab a co-pilot
New for this version: local co-op, where two players share one Arwing and split the cockpit jobs. It is a genuinely good way to bring in someone who bounces off the difficulty. One flies, one shoots, nobody rage-quits. Well, fewer people rage-quit.
