GSC Game World has picked August 20 for its first proper STALKER 2 expansion, Cost of Hope. It is a paid add-on, and it is worth a look. But the thing that lands the same day and costs nothing might matter more.
The free bit first
Update 2.0 goes out to everyone who owns STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, DLC or no DLC. The big move is an engine jump from Unreal Engine 5.1 to 5.5.4, which GSC says brings better lighting, shadows, reflections and vegetation. On paper that is a nicer-looking Zone; in practice, an engine swap this late is the sort of thing that can go either way, so watch the launch-day reports before you get your hopes up.
The more interesting change is to A-Life, STALKER 2's simulation of factions and mutants living their own lives when you are not looking. It has been a sore point since release. Update 2.0 widens A-Life activity, lets fog actually affect what the AI can hear and see, and adds a Custom Rules difficulty mode so you can tune the Zone to taste. There are four new weapons, three types of binoculars, and a PDA statistics page thrown in too.
What the money buys
Cost of Hope runs in parallel with the base campaign. A mysterious PDA signal drags Skif into a factional mess and out toward two new regions: the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest. GSC is promising dozens of hours, along with fresh weapons, gear and enemies.
If you bounced off STALKER 2 at launch over the jank, this is the update that is actually aimed at you. Whether the fixes hold up under fire is the question we cannot answer until Wednesday.
