Serious Sam: Shatterverse is out today, and it's a different beast to the old games: a 1-to-5-player co-op roguelite where you fight through shifting universes, pick up boons between fights, and start over when you die. Behaviour Interactive is developing, Devolver's publishing, and it's on PS5, Xbox Series and PC. Death isn't a fail state here, it's the loop. Here are a few things worth knowing going in.
Keep moving, always
This is still Serious Sam under the roguelite paint. Standing still is how you die. The series has always been about backpedalling and circle-strafing while a wall of enemies funnels toward you, and Shatterverse hasn't changed that. Treat every arena as a track to run laps on, not a spot to hold.
Your run is only as good as your boons
The upgrades you grab between encounters decide the run. Early on you won't know which ones stack, so read them properly rather than grabbing the shiniest icon. A boring "+15% fire rate" that plays nice with your current weapon usually beats a flashy one that fights your build. You'll learn the good combos by dying to bad ones. That's fine, that's the game.
Don't hoard
New players sit on their big weapon and their best consumables "for when it gets hard." It's a horde shooter. It's always hard, and the ammo economy assumes you're spending. Use the loud stuff on the crowds it was built for.
In co-op, split the jobs
With up to five of you it's tempting to all shoot the same thing. Don't. Someone watches the flanks, someone handles the big single targets, everyone calls out when they're reloading or down. Focus-firing the same grunt while a brute walks up behind the group is how a good run ends early.
It's launch day, so builds and balance will shift as patches land. If you want the wider picture of what Shatterverse actually is, we covered the launch here. For now: keep moving, spend your ammo, and stop treating the health pickup like a pension.
