Rengoku is back in Rainbow Six Siege, and if you've never touched it, here's the pitch: forget your operator gadgets. Everyone gets a shotgun and a handful of kunai, and the rest of your carefully-drilled tactics go out the window along with the knives.

It's running from August 5 to August 26, so there's a few weeks to sink into it. The mode is Control the Points on a reworked Skyscraper that Ubisoft has dressed up as a floating temple in a mythic version of Japan. Two teams scrap over Altars, and first to 300 Favour, or whoever's ahead after ten minutes, takes the round.

How it actually plays

The kunai are the fun part. Impact ones break walls, so you can crack the map open on the fly. The special-ability variants handle the elemental business, so fire, poison, flash, knockback and traps, and there's a straight lethal throw that one-shots on a direct hit. It is chaotic, and it does not pretend to be balanced. That's rather the point.

The free stuff, and the not-free stuff

You can claim a Rengoku Collection Pack just for logging in during the event, and there's more to unlock through challenges and Twitch drops, up to an animated memento skin if you finish the set. Caveira, Flores and Gridlock get new bundles built around the Japanese-mythology theme. Those are the paid ones, so read them for what they are. The event itself and the login rewards cost nothing.

If you bounced off Siege's ranked grind, this is the low-stakes way back in. No gadget meta to memorise, just shotguns, knives and bad decisions.
