Quake is 30, and rather than mark it with a nostalgic tweet and a sale, id Software and MachineGames actually made a new episode. It's called Dawn of the Machine, it's 19 maps deep, and if you already own Quake it costs nothing.
Who made it, and why that matters
MachineGames handled Dimension of the Machine and Dimension of the Past, the two genuinely good modern Quake add-ons, so this isn't a bolted-on curio. Bethesda's calling it a full campaign with a new soundtrack, a dedicated episode hub, hidden secrets and a fresh deathmatch map. You play the Ranger through a dimension where time folds back on itself, grabbing runes to open sealed paths and carrying health and ammo upgrades forward as you go.
Where to get it
It's a free update on just about everything Quake already runs on: PS5, PS4, Switch 2, Switch, Steam, Xbox Series, Xbox One, the Microsoft Store and Game Pass. If it's in your library, the episode's sitting in the update.
Thirty years on, the answer to "why is this still fun" hasn't changed since 1996: it moves fast and it doesn't waste your time. Nineteen new maps for nothing is a good way to spend the birthday.
