Pokemon Pokopia has been quietly one of Nintendo's steadier sellers this year, and on August 5 it got its first proper expansion. Bubbly Basin is Part 1 of the paid Expansion Pass, and it does the sensible thing for a building game: it gives you a new dimension to build in. In this case, that dimension is down.
Free update first
The move that makes all of it work, Dive, arrives in the free Ver. 2.0.0 update that dropped the same day. So even if you skip the paid content, you can now move around and build underwater. That is a genuinely nice split, the traversal is free and the destination is paid, rather than gating the basic mechanic behind the DLC.
What Bubbly Basin gives you
The paid part is mostly underwater, with some surface areas too. Popplio turns up at a new town called Bubbly Basin, and you grow the place by working through requests from the Pokemon you meet down there. You also get buoyant blocks for floating structures, an extra Dream Island, in-game watermelons, new furniture, and 50 new Pokemon to find, Starmie, Kingdra, Feraligatr and the mythical Manaphy among them.
Nintendo has already teased that Part 2 of the Expansion Pass is coming, so this is the first half of a longer plan rather than the whole thing. If you bounced off Pokopia earlier for feeling a bit thin, an entire underwater layer is a fair reason to have another look.
