It has been a long wait. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is out this Friday, September 4, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC. Capcom confirmed the date and, back in July, actually moved it up three weeks from the original September 25.
This is the first new mainline Onimusha in over 20 years. You play Miyamoto Musashi, and the setting is an Edo-era Kyoto twisted by drifting clouds of Malice. If you grew up on the PS2 originals, that pitch alone probably did the work.
Worth a bit of caution
A series coming back after two decades dormant can go either way. Capcom has been on a good run, which helps, but a long-sleeping name carries expectations that a brand-new one doesn't. And bringing the date forward three weeks is either quiet confidence or a schedule move to dodge a busier stretch later in the month. We will know which when it is in people's hands on Friday.
