Oblivion Remastered hits Switch 2 on Tuesday, and for a lot of people this will be their first trip to Cyrodiil. It is a wonderful, slightly broken old game, and a handful of things are worth knowing before you get stuck in. None of this is gatekeeping; it is just the stuff that trips up newcomers.

1. Understand level scaling before it bites you

Oblivion's most infamous quirk: enemies level up alongside you, so overlevelling badly can leave you weaker than the bandits in fancy armour. The old trap is grinding your minor skills for easy levels while your combat stats lag behind. You do not need a spreadsheet. Just pick major skills you will genuinely use in a fight, and level with intent rather than by accident.

2. Turn on mouse mode or motion aiming

The Switch 2 version supports mouse mode and gyro, and for a game built around aiming spells and arrows, it is night and day compared with thumbsticks. Try it early rather than 20 hours in wondering why your archer feels stiff.

3. The Shivering Isles is in the box, so plan for it

Every edition includes all the DLC, and the Shivering Isles expansion is the best thing here by a mile. You do not have to rush it, but know it is waiting. It is a full weird world of its own.

4. Explore on foot early, fast-travel later

Fast travel is generous, but Oblivion's charm is in getting lost, stumbling into a cave, following a stranger with a quest. It runs at 30fps handheld, which suits a slower, poke-around-the-world pace anyway. Save the instant travel for when the map admin becomes a chore.

5. Save often, and in more than one slot

This is a 2006 Bethesda RPG. Quests can snarl up, scripts can hiccup, and a rolling set of manual saves is your insurance. One save slot is how you lose an evening. Keep three or four on the go.
