Mortal Shell II is out, and like the first one it doesn't hold your hand. If you're new to it, or you bounced off the 2020 game, here's what's worth knowing before the world starts hollowing you out.

Harden is your whole game

The signature move returns. Hold the Harden button (LB on a controller) and you turn to stone, negating the next hit entirely. It runs on a cooldown, not stamina, and you can trigger it mid-swing or mid-air: start a heavy attack, harden through the enemy's response, then let your swing land while you're untouchable. Time it dead-on and you get a Perfect Harden, which builds the enemy's Break meter toward a riposte.

Use it on the front foot, not just in a panic. Baiting a boss into hitting your stone form and punishing the recovery is the core loop. One thing to keep in mind: red attacks can't be hardened. Those you dodge.

Don't marry your first Shell

Shells are the bodies you inhabit, each with its own stats and feel. It's tempting to lock into the first one that clicks, but they're built to be swapped as you learn fights. Try all of them. The right Shell is usually the one that suits the boss in front of you, not the one you started in.

Read every swing in three beats

Each enemy attack has a wind-up, an active hit, and a recovery. Learn to see those three phases and both your Harden timing and your punish windows fall into place. You can even fold Harden into a dodge roll, tapping it during the roll's opening frames to eat a hit while you reposition.

Past that: explore properly, because the world rewards it now, and don't hoard your healing. You'll die on a full stock more often than you'd like. Take it slow, learn the tells, and let the stone do the work.
