IllFonic has spent years making horror-movie villains playable, and its next one is the big one: Michael Myers. Halloween: The Game goes live tomorrow, September 8, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, priced at $39.99. If you sprang for the $59.99 Digital Deluxe, you've actually been playing since September 4, when the pricier tier opened four days of early access.
It's the familiar asymmetric setup: four residents of Haddonfield against one player wearing the mask. The Myers player stalks the neighbourhood with stealth and a teleport move called Shape Jump, picking people off before the night ends. The four survivors scavenge period-accurate 1978 clutter for weapons and tools, warn the NPCs, and try to either call the police or reach an escape route.
The catch
IllFonic's history here is the thing to keep in mind. The studio made Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds, and both had real moments buried under rough launches and thin post-release support. Asymmetric horror lives or dies on how well one killer feels against four panicking friends, and on whether the servers hold up on night one. We'll know within a day whether Myers lands or slips.
Building it on the original 1978 film is the right call. That slow, suburban dread is exactly what this genre wants. Whether the game keeps the tension once you've learned the maps and the killer's tricks is the open question, and it's the one that has sunk games like this before.
