Rockstar has put two questions to bed, at least for the story mode. Speaking to Kinda Funny during a visit to Rockstar North, co-studio head Rob Nelson said GTA 6's single-player campaign will launch with no microtransactions and that the game was built without generative AI. His line was that it's fully human-crafted, with no real-money spending baked into the campaign.
The AI answer
Nelson's comment lines up with what Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz earlier, that generative AI played no part in building GTA 6. Rockstar has leaned the other way instead: it reportedly stood up a research team in Miami to give the world real-world texture and hired a stylist to dress its NPCs. Make of that what you will, but it's a pointed answer at a moment when plenty of studios are going the opposite direction.
The word doing the heavy lifting is 'single-player'
Here's the honest read. Everything above applies to the campaign. GTA Online is a separate question, and Rockstar left it open. That's not a gotcha so much as history repeating: GTA V shipped a clean single-player and then GTA Online became one of the most lucrative money-printers in the industry. Nobody should be shocked if a live-service layer with its own economy turns up down the line.
So take the win for what it is. The story mode you buy at launch is the story mode, with no shark cards nudging you mid-mission. What happens when the online side spins up is a conversation for another day, and one worth watching.
