Here's the number a lot of people were quietly dreading: 30. In comments picked up by GamesRadar and TechRadar, Rockstar's Rob Nelson said the current GTA 6 build runs at 30fps on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. Asked whether a 60fps mode would land at or after launch, he said the technical team still has to confirm what's possible. That's not a yes.
What was actually said
The key word is current. Nelson was talking about the build as it stands in development, not a final, locked spec. So this isn't Rockstar slamming the door on 60fps forever. It's Rockstar declining to promise it, months out, with a game this size running on hardware that's now a few years old.
Worth being clear-eyed about the console in the room: even the PS5 Pro is reportedly sitting at 30fps in this build. If the Pro can't brute-force a performance mode yet, a base PS5 or Series X almost certainly won't be handed one for free.
Is 30fps a dealbreaker?
Honestly, for a lot of people, no. GTA has always been a game you sink into rather than a twitch shooter, and Rockstar's last two open worlds looked the part at 30. But we've had five years of 60fps and 120fps modes being the norm, and going backwards always stings, even when the game is gorgeous.
My read: expect 30fps at launch, hope for a 40fps or 60fps mode to arrive in a patch once the team has shipped and can breathe. That's the pattern the industry has settled into, and Nelson's careful wording fits it.
This lands the same week Rockstar still hasn't said a word about a PC version, and after an extended look that confirmed no story-mode microtransactions. GTA 6 is due November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
