Gamescom's Opening Night Live ran a little over two hours on Tuesday, Geoff Keighley hosting as ever, and for once the show put the good stuff up front instead of burying it. No single earth-mover, but a solid run of trailers and a couple of genuine surprises. Here's what stuck.
Gears of War: E-Day has a date
The big one for Xbox. The prequel got a story trailer showing Emergence Day going exactly as badly as you'd expect, plus a release date to match: October 6, on Xbox Series X/S and PC. It's first-party, so Game Pass day one is the safe bet. We wrote that one up on its own.
Ubisoft goes turn-based with Rainbow Six Tactics
Nobody had this on the card. Ubisoft revealed Rainbow Six Tactics, a single-player, turn-based spin-off that lifts Siege's operators and drops them into something that looks a lot like XCOM. It's from Ubisoft Paris, the Mario + Rabbids team, and it's coming in 2027. Ubisoft also swears there's no store and no live-service layer, which, from Ubisoft, earns a raised eyebrow and a firm "we'll see".
Snoop Dogg turns up in Hitman
IO Interactive is dropping Snoop Dogg into Hitman: World of Assassination as a free Elusive Target called The Herbalist, live from August 27. His son Cordell Broadus is in it too. It's daft in the way the best Elusive Targets are daft. Separate story on that as well.
The rest of the show
The Witcher 3's Songs of the Past expansion showed its first proper footage ahead of a 2027 launch. There were fresh trailers for Metro 2039 and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, a new Worms tactics game (yes, Worms doing XCOM too), and a cozy life-sim called Petit Planet from HoYoverse. Plenty of filler around the edges, as always.
No shutdowns, no shock acquisitions, no price bombs. Just a good night of games. The show floor opens to the public on Wednesday.
