It's showtime. Gamescom Opening Night Live runs tonight, Tuesday 25 August, and if you want the reveals without a week of second-hand clips, this is the one to sit through live.

When it starts and where to watch

The main show starts at 7pm BST (2pm ET / 11am PT / 8pm CEST), with a 30-minute pre-show ahead of it. Geoff Keighley hosts alongside Eefje "Sjokz" Depoortere, and it's streaming free on The Game Awards' YouTube and Twitch channels. Budget for the full two hours, because these things run long and the back half is where the surprises usually hide.

What's actually confirmed

Keighley has been dropping the lineup in pieces, so this isn't the whole card, but here's what's been named going in:

  • The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past gets another look, after CD Projekt showed its first footage last week.
  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation, with director Naoki Hamaguchi turning up in person.
  • Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.
  • Gears of War: E-Day.
  • Silent Hill: Townfall, Metro 2039 and Valor Mortis.

That's a decent spine for a show, and the "and more" is doing its usual heavy lifting. ONL is as much a trailer reel as a news event, so expect a chunk of it to be release dates for things you already knew about, padded with a few genuine premieres.

The honest bit

Keighley shows are always part showcase, part advert, and the pacing can test your patience. Watch it for the two or three reveals nobody saw coming, mute the sponsor segments, and don't let the countdown timer convince you every trailer is a system-seller. We'll write up whatever's worth writing up once the dust settles.
