Final Fantasy 14 is on Switch 2 as of today, the free trial included, which means a fresh wave of people are about to bounce off its notoriously slow opening or its wall of menus. A few minutes of setup makes the difference between "this is clunky" and "oh, I get it now." Here's what to do first.

1. Fix your controller layout before anything else

Out of the box, controller play feels awkward, and most people never touch the settings that fix it. Head into Character Configuration, then Custom, then PvE Settings, and turn on the expanded cross hotbar (holding LT and RT at once opens extra slots). That single change is the biggest reason controller players stop fighting the interface. While you're in there, sort your auto-target settings so you're not tab-fumbling mid-fight.

2. Use keyboard and mouse when it suits you

The Switch 2 build supports full keyboard and mouse, and even the Joy-Con's mouse mode. You don't have to pick one forever. Menus, markets and crafting are just faster with a pointer; combat's comfier on the pad. Swap depending on what you're doing that session.

3. Play to the hardware in handheld

Director Naoki Yoshida flagged handheld mode as best for the calmer stuff, gathering, crafting, running around town, since cities target 30fps. That's not a knock; it's a plan. Save the busy, effect-heavy content for docked if smoothness matters to you, and use handheld for the cosy grind.

4. Treat the free month as a clock

You get 30 days before the subscription kicks in. That's plenty to clear the base game (A Realm Reborn), but it front-loads a lot of setup and fetch quests. Push through to the first expansion, Heavensward, which is where most veterans will tell you the story properly clicks. Don't burn week one on side content.

5. Don't over-buy on day one

The trial lets you reach a decent chunk of the game for free, so there's no rush to grab the Complete Edition. Play, see if it grabs you, then decide whether you want everything through Dawntrail. The game isn't going anywhere, and neither is that pre-order sale panic the storefront wants you to feel.
