If Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is your first trip into the Lands Between, the character creation screen now has two faces it didn't before. Both are also dropping as DLC on other platforms, but they're baked into the Switch 2 version, so new players will bump into them straight away. Here's the quick version of what they are and whether to bother.
The Heavy Knight
Starts at level 10, built around Strength, and comes wrapped in bulky steel with a large scimitar. It's the closest thing to "just let me hit things hard" the game offers out of the gate. The higher starting level sounds like a head start, and it is a small one, but it also means slightly less room to shape your stats early. Good if you already know you want a heavy melee build and don't want to think about it.
The Idus Knight
Starts at level 7, leans on Dexterity, and plays lighter and quicker, with a slender sword and an agile feel. If you like dodging, spacing, and punishing openings rather than trading blows, this is the more interesting of the two.
So should you pick one?
Honestly: it doesn't matter as much as the screen makes it feel. Your starting class in Elden Ring sets your opening stats and gear, not your destiny. Within a few hours you'll be levelling whatever you want and finding weapons that pull you in a new direction anyway. The old advice still holds. If you want a safe, flexible start, the classic Vagabond is hard to beat; if you want a blank slate to sculpt yourself, the Wretch is the meme-worthy hard-mode pick.
The two newcomers are a nice bit of variety, not a shortcut. Pick the Heavy Knight if you want to swing big from minute one, the Idus Knight if you fancy something nimble, and don't lose sleep over it either way. The Lands Between will humble all four of them the same amount.
