The first Aliens: Fireteam Elite was a decent co-op shooter that got better the more its systems opened up. The sequel lands August 25 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — near enough five years to the day after the original — with a Switch 2 version trailing into autumn.

Cold Iron Studios is back on development, with Daybreak publishing, and the pitch is straightforward: more of you against more of them.

What's changed

The headline is squad size. You're now a fireteam of four rather than three, which sounds small until you think about how much of the first game was about covering angles in a corridor while xenomorphs poured in from three directions. A fourth gun and a fourth ability loadout changes the maths of a hold.

The other addition worth caring about is the Specialist — a class you build yourself, mixing a major and a minor ability pulled from the other classes. If you like tuning a role to plug whatever gap your squad has, that's the one to watch. The rest of the package is the expected sequel checklist: revised classes, encounters designed around coordination, and enemy AI that's meant to punish four people who aren't talking to each other.

Worth a look?

It's launching at $49.99, which is a sensible ask for a co-op shooter rather than a full-price gamble, and it drops the same week as Gamescom, so it won't want for attention. The real question with these games is always the same one: does the loot-and-level loop have enough legs to keep a squad coming back after the campaign? We'll know soon enough. If you've got three mates and a free evening on the 25th, the setup's there.
