Early access to Modern Warfare 4's campaign went live this week, ahead of the full 23 October launch, and the first reviews have landed. These cover the single-player only, since multiplayer and the DMZ-style mode get scored later, but the early read is good.
What the critics are saying
IGN gave the campaign a provisional 8/10, praising the mission variety and a strong cast while noting it won't crack the series' all-time top tier. Its line: "Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again." Insider Gaming went further with a 9/10, calling it the "greatest Call of Duty campaign ever made" even as it stumbles in places. GameSpot landed at 7/10 and reckoned it's the best campaign since 2019's Modern Warfare, crediting the extra time in the oven.
The common complaint is mission design. GamesRadar liked the set pieces and performances but flagged rigid, restrictive missions that occasionally spoil the fun, and Windows Central described a mostly linear, on-rails run of 16 missions clocking in at six to eight hours.
What to actually expect
So: a cinematic, tightly scripted campaign that people are enjoying, with the usual Call of Duty caveat that "linear" is a selling point for some and a cage for others. Infinity Ward and Digital Legends are on development, Activision is publishing, and it's $69.99 / £69.99 at launch across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and, notably, Switch 2. A verdict on the whole package has to wait for the servers to fill up.
