If you skipped Mewgenics on PC because "breed mutant cats and send them into turn-based battles" sounded like a bit, here's your second chance. It lands on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 tomorrow, September 8, for $39.99.
It's the new one from Edmund McMillen, the mind behind The Binding of Isaac, working with Tyler Glaiel. It shadow-dropped onto Steam back in February and quietly became one of the best-reviewed games of the year. GamesRadar's reviewer flat-out called it their game of the year. Plenty of games get that said about them; fewer earn it while asking you to selectively breed cats for their illnesses.
So what actually is it?
You run a colony of cats, pair them off, and send litters into tactical grid combat. Survivors breed. Their kittens inherit the good traits and the horrible ones. A cat might pass down a killer ability or a chronic condition that slowly wrecks your plans. It's a roguelike, so a run can fall apart, and the humour stays pitch-black throughout.
The console version is the same game PC players have been chewing on since winter, not a stripped-back port. If you've been waiting for it to leave the keyboard, this is it.
Forty quid isn't nothing for something this odd, but the PC reception has been strong enough that the risk feels low. Worst case, you own the strangest tactics game on your console. Best case, you lose a fortnight to cat genetics.
