NetEase is pushing Marvel Rivals' Season 9.5 update live on August 7, and the headline is a new playable hero: The Hood. He arrives alongside a new event called Creed of Akkaba, per the official Dev Vision blog. This is a "half-season" patch, so think fresh character and events now, with the bigger Season 10 overhaul landing September 11.
What's in it
The Hood is the actual new content, and a new hero is always the thing worth logging back in for. After that, the roadmap gets more familiar. August 14 brings the Summer Festival Vol. 2 swimsuit skins for Scarlet Witch, Magik and Storm, plus a new animation-customisation system debuting on Lady Loki that lets you toggle exclusive movement and ability animations. August 21 adds Hellfire Gala costumes for Cyclops and Phoenix.
Read it for what it is
A new hero mid-season is genuinely decent value, and Marvel Rivals has kept a steady drumbeat of them. But look at the shape of the rest: one new hero, then two premium cosmetic lines and a new animation system. That's not a knock exactly, cosmetics keep a free-to-play game's lights on. It's just worth seeing the split clearly. The Hood is free content you'll enjoy for nothing. The swimsuit skins and the Hellfire Gala costumes are there to move money, so budget accordingly.
