Sony saved the big one for the end. June's State of Play shut with over twenty minutes of a new God of War, and the twist is who you're playing. Not Kratos. Faye, his wife, the one whose funeral opens the 2018 game, revealed back then to be the giant Laufey the Just.
A different kind of God of War
God of War: Laufey follows Faye into the Norse afterlife, where she's fighting to protect Kratos and Atreus from the other side. Deborah Ann Woll reprises the role, and on the evidence of that gameplay, Faye moves nothing like her husband: quicker, lighter, more fluid, less of the heavy axe-thud rhythm the series is built on. It's a real swing rather than a reskin, which is more than a lot of big sequels bother with.
The odd note
Her travelling companion is a gelatinous cube called Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid. I have read that back several times and it still sounds made up. Santa Monica clearly wants some levity to cut against a story about the dead, and a talking jelly cube is one way to get it. We'll see if it lands or grates.
It's PS5, and there's no release date, so temper the excitement with patience. But a God of War that hands you a new lead and a new moveset instead of Kratos on autopilot? That's a better pitch than another round of the same. Show me more.
