If you have missed the HD-2D look since Octopath Traveler and the Live A Live remake, Square Enix has another one landing this week. Final Fantasy Resonance arrives Thursday, October 22, across PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch and Switch 2, all on the same day.
It is the first Final Fantasy built in that HD-2D style, pixel sprites over soft, diorama-like 3D backdrops. When Square Enix announced it, the pitch was a story adapting the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the long-running mobile RPG, so it is new without being from nowhere.
There's a demo, so you don't have to guess
A free demo is already out. That is the move here: HD-2D games look gorgeous in every screenshot and then stand or fall on whether the battle system has any bite, so a couple of hours of the real thing tells you far more than a trailer can. Give it a go before Thursday and you will know whether this is a day-one buy or a wishlist-for-later.
No launch-week pricing fireworks to report, no drama, just a good-looking RPG turning up on basically everything at once. Sometimes that is all the news a game needs to be.
