Cyberpunk 2077 is heading for the big screen. Deadline reported this week that Paramount is developing a live-action film set in the game's world, with CD Projekt Red producing alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe movies.

Before anyone starts casting V in their head: this is very early. There's no director, no cast, and no release window. What we have is a studio, a rights-holder, and a producer attached, which is the paperwork stage, not the trailer stage.

What's confirmed, and what isn't

CD Projekt owns the rights and is producing, so this isn't a licence-it-and-forget-it deal. Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski called Paramount a partner who shares the studio's ambitions for the franchise and said more would come at the appropriate time, which is corporate for don't ask us for details yet.

Everything past that is open. The plot, whether it follows the game's story or tells a new one in Night City, and when any of it actually starts shooting, none of that has been announced.

The honest caveat

Game-to-film adaptations have a patchy record, and Cyberpunk's own best screen outing so far was animated, not live-action. The anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, set a high bar, and its second season starts streaming on 20 October. A live-action film has to clear that, with a producer whose CV is big blockbuster spectacle rather than moody near-future character drama. There's reason to be curious. There's also reason to keep expectations in neutral until we see who's directing.
