If you're waiting on Helldivers 3, Arrowhead's chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt has a straight answer: don't hold your breath, and here's the reasoning. Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun, he said a third game only makes sense "if it's so different that both games can exist side by side."
His logic is refreshingly honest. Helldivers 2's biggest competitor would be Helldivers 2. "Making Helldivers 2 better every day makes way more sense than throwing away its momentum," he said. The players are the engine. They recruit mates, make the memes, keep the thing alive, and you don't replace that just to put a bigger number on the box.
So what's actually being made
About 95% of the studio is on Helldivers 2. A small team is poking at new ideas, but it's very early, more sketches than a sequel in production. Pilestedt also made a wider point: the old live-service playbook isn't working anymore, and studios are feeling it.
It echoes what CEO Shams Jorjani said about a year back, that Arrowhead would keep working on Helldivers 2 indefinitely. For once, "no sequel yet" is the good news. It means the game you're already playing keeps getting the attention, instead of being quietly wound down to sell you the next one.
